Each Enneagram style avoids a particular thing that they unconsciously believe will undermine their self-image.  This unconscious self-belief often results in behaviour opposite of fear; for example, avoidance of criticism for Enneagram 1 might result in a personal drive for perfection. However, that person might be perceived as highly critical of others (and themselves, which is often not seen).

Enneagram 1’s are often avoidant of criticism which results in the drive for perfection.

Enneagram 2’s are often avoidant of their own needs, which results in the drive to appear helpful.

Enneagram 3

Enneagram 3’s are often avoidant of failure, which results in the drive to achieve success.

Enneagram 4

Enneagram 4’s are often avoidant of meaninglessness, which results in the drive to be different

Enneagram 5

Enneagram 5’s are often social interaction, which results in the drive for privacy and solitude.

Enneagram 6

Enneagram 6’s are often avoidant of risk & danger, which results in the drive for safety.

Enneagram 7

Enneagram 7’s are often avoidant of restraint & negativity, which results in the drive for freedom and positivity.

Enneagram 8’s are often avoidant of appearing weak, which results in the drive to appear strong.

Enneagram 9’s are often avoidant of conflict, which results in the drive to maintain harmony.
